Traveling to Europe On a Budget

Traveling to Europe On a Budget

This post may contain affiliate links and I may earn a small commission when you click on the links at no additional cost to you.

Exploring Europe doesn’t have to be expensive. I’m going to share my top tips for traveling to Europe on a budget. These tips are great for both backpackers and savvy planners. They’ll help you make your European dream come true without spending too much.

I’ll show you how to find affordable places to stay and how to travel cheap. You’ll learn how to plan a trip that’s both affordable and full of culture and beauty.

Embracing the Backpacker Lifestyle

Want to travel Europe without spending a lot? The backpacker lifestyle is your key to affordable fun. By choosing cheap accommodation in Europe like hostels and packing light, you can visit places that might be too expensive otherwise.

Do yourself the favor and go to Europe ‘off season’ (roughly November through March) to avoid the heavy crowds and score on cheaper flights and accommodations.

Hostels: Your Budget-Friendly Accommodation

Hostels are key for backpackers, letting you save money and dive into local life. They offer cozy dorms or private rooms, making it easy to meet other travelers. Hostels are much cheaper than hotels, making them perfect for those watching their spending.

Packing Light and Traveling with a Backpack

Packing light is crucial for budget travel. A backpack lets you move easily, skip baggage fees, and get around cities without hassle. Focus on the basics, dress in layers, and go for a simple style. Your back and wallet will appreciate it.

With hostels and packing smart, you open the door to affordable adventures and cultural experiences.

Unlock the Secrets of Affordable Transportation

Exploring Europe can be exciting, but it can also be expensive. But, there are ways to travel cheaply. By using budget airlines and trains, you can save money and see more.

Book Your Flights Early

Since airfare is one of the biggest expenses when traveling to Europe it pays to book your flights as early as possible. By June I’ve already made up my mind as to where I want to go and I usually book my flights by July or August.

I usually will toggle between; Google Flights, PriceLine, Kayak and Expedia looking for the best deal. Do yourself the favor and use incognito mode on your browser…that way they don’t drop cookies and track what you’re doing.

After using the above sites I then book with reasonable layovers that won’t make my flight too long/hellish. I also like using apps like Skyscanner, they’re great for catching cheap flights within Europe.

Train Travel: Scenic and Cost-Effective

Traveling via rail is a great choice for a relaxing trip. It’s eco-friendly allowing you to soak in the beautiful views. Many countries have rail passes that let you visit several places for one price. This makes train travel a smart and fun way to see Europe.

  • Explore the scenic landscapes of Europe by train.
  • Take advantage of rail pass programs to save on long-distance travel.
  • Enjoy the comfort and convenience of efficient train networks.

Using a combination of rail and Skyscanner lets you travel Europe without spending a ton of money. With just a little planning, you can have a great trip and save money.

Unlock Student Discounts

One great way to save money in Europe is by using student discounts. Many museums, attractions, and even transport services offer lower prices for students. Consider getting a ISIC Card which is still recognized and simply ask about discounts before buying anything.

Discover Free and Low-Cost Activities

There is so much to see in Europe and the best part so much is free to see and cheap to visit. I’ve done several self-guided walking tours seeing historic sites allowing me to see sites older than the USA visiting local markets and of course enjoying the local foods. These simple activities are affordable and give you a real taste of the local life.

Free and Low-Cost ActivitiesApproximate Cost
Walking tour in ParisFree
Entry to the National Gallery in LondonFree
Visiting the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona€40 – €65
Vienna’s Summer Night Concert (June)Free

If you’re traveling completely solo and landed in country then using GetYourGuide.com will be your best friend. With some research and flexibility and using your student discounts will allow you to take advantage of these cheap activities. These will help you make the most of your money and dive into Europe’s lively cultures.

Savor Local Cuisine Without Breaking the Bank

Exploring local cuisine is key to experiencing Europe, but it can be pricey. Here I’m going to show you how to score cheap eats in Europe without breaking the bank. Here are some tips I found in eating cheap while in Europe.

Street Food: A Delicious and Wallet-Friendly Option

Street food in Europe is a tasty and affordable way to dive into local flavors. You can try everything from French crêpes to German currywurst without spending a lot. My personal favorite was the flauta de jamón ibérico while I was in Barcelona.

Street food lets you taste many local dishes without emptying your wallet. I do this every time when I’m in Europe and rarely go to a restaurant unless if it’s part of the tour.

For the best street food, look for outdoor markets, food stalls, and trucks. These places offer a variety of dishes at good prices. Also, check out neighborhoods famous for their street food for the best cheap eats in Europe and budget-friendly destinations In Europe.

One of the best outdoor markets I ate in Vienna was Naschmarkt, it was awesome and much more affordable in my opinion.

Viennese Goulash

I would avoid any restaurant where the menu is in English or it’s simply pictures. My own experiences is that those types of places serve bad food at inflated prices.

There are more ways to eat well without spending a lot. Look for local bakeries, cafes, and small eateries that offer tasty meals at lower prices. Or, buy groceries and cook simple meals in your accommodation.

Explore Free and Low-Cost Attractions

Exploring the European continent is full of free and affordable attractions which is perfect for any traveler. You can see the best of Europe from walking tours to cultural events, there are many ways to enjoy Europe’s history and culture without spending much at all.

One great way to dive into local culture is by taking a free walking tour. These tours are led by locals who know the city well. They show you the top sights and hidden spots in cities like Paris, Rome, or Amsterdam. It’s a great way to get to know the city and its history.

If you love art and history, many European museums offer free days or discounts for students and seniors. You can visit famous museums like the Louvre in Paris, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, or the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam without spending a lot. These museums are not just beautiful but also offer deep insights into the region’s art and history.

For those who love the outdoors, Europe has many free activities to enjoy. You can hike through beautiful landscapes or join local festivals and events. Whether you’re walking through Versailles gardens or enjoying folk music in a small town, these cheap activities can make your trip memorable without costing a lot.
