So many of us are stuck in a rut daydreaming about traveling somewhere exotic only to be hindered because we think we need thousands of dollars to travel. Then the idea of traveling on a shoestring budget can be a turn-off because of the false notion you’re sacrificing the full experience. Here are some travel hacks to consider when planning your next vacation to guide you and get the most out of your next trip. Remember there’s never the perfect time to travel and start taking action.

Plan ahead…way ahead:

This is something I always do as I hate leaving things for the last minute. For the past 17 years, I’ve always decided by June / July where I wanted to celebrate New Year’s Eve. I’d choose a spot where I’ve never been and commit to it. The airfare is dirt cheap and more importantly the layovers are never that long (depending on where you go).

Always compare airfare and look for sales!

This is probably the most important travel hack. No matter what always compare airfare from different sites and compare. This should seem logical but some people miss this important step. Personally, when I book an international flight I make sure my connection/layover is never too long.

Hot Tip: While most are buying crap from Amazon on Black Friday and Cyber Monday take a look at what travel deals are available. You’d be surprised by the deals you can find on the net.

Favorite Travel Hacks!

Below are some of my favorite travel hacks I use whenever I travel. The best part is they require little effort and in many cases won’t cost you a dime.

Stay at a hostel:

This is simply the best option for students and 20-something budget travelers. Hostels are probably the only option for travelers working on a shoestring budget but they come with many perks!

  • You’ll be around people your own age.
  • You’ll be among like-minded individuals
  • Many Hostels are known for being FUN! However not all hostels are the same, some are party hostels while others are low-key.

Fill up on the free food and eat cheap!

I do this on every trip! In every country I’ve visited, I always had a huge breakfast. I can’t stress this travel hack enough since nearly all hotels have buffets so just fill up your belly. I usually avoided eating out in restaurants, especially in touristy areas, and look for street food. When I visited Germany back in 2008 I simply had beer and brats for lunch right on the street. If you’re part of a guided tour they usually will set up a nice lunch and dinner that’s included but not always.

Coffee bar!
Grab yourself a plate….
more deliciousness….
Best part of the breakfast buffet!

Hot Tip: If you’re doing a walking tour make sure to grab an apple, or banana from the breakfast buffet so you can have a light lunch.

Discover hidden gems off the beaten path:

This goes without saying but do your best to avoid tourist traps, they exist to suck your wallet dry. Although there are certain places like the Eiffel Tower that you want to see, it’s safe to say a place like that is overrated. I was 21 when I first traveled outside the US and landed in France. In my experience I found Paris to be very underwhelming however, when I visited Brittany that’s where I felt I received the authentic French experience.

Avoid tourist traps!

In those instances where you didn’t have a chance to eat cheap then shop at local markets. In so many cities around the world, they have their own farmer’s market with very reasonable prices. The same goes for souvenirs, they’re less expensive outside the main city center….sometimes just a couple of blocks away.

Check to see if you need a visa:

Not every country but there are several that require a VISA before entry like Cambodia. Before the trip, I simply visited the consulate and applied right there before stepping foot into the country. So check your destination if they too require a VISA and read what the costs are and terms.

Be a minimalist backpacker:

This is a fun one, I pack light and use a 40-liter backpack when I travel saving me baggage check fees. I really don’t like to lug around a huge piece of luggage since it gets in the way. Besides, nearly all airlines charge for checked bags. Being a minimalist backpacker forces you to pack smart just with the essentials.

You can read more about minimalist backpacks in my product reviews.

Take advantage of free attractions:

This travel hack came in real handy when I visited Germany. There are so many free museums, particularly in Berlin. Not only is Berlin a great city they’re peppered with museums. There are so many things you can do for free that don’t require money. Same with walking around a beautiful city like Prague.

Get an ISIC Card:

I never had the chance to take advantage of this hack when I was in college. ISIC is an International Student Identity Card. If you’re planning on an extended backpacking trek through Europe then this card is for you. There are so many ISIC discounts that are available to you just because you’re a student, you’d be a fool to pass this up! Also, this is the only recognized international student card in over 130 countries.

Always research your dream spot:

This should be obvious to all but I stress just do a little bit of research. Usually, YouTube will have loads of videos for you about the destination you’re considering. The weather, customs, and travel warnings in certain areas.

Last Tip For Budget Travelers:

Be realistic and open!

I can’t stress this enough! For many of you it may be the first trip you’re planning so leave behind the very high expectations of said destination because you saw some photo-shopped image on social media. Also, you’ll be experiencing a different culture with different customs. Simply go in with an open mind, make some new friends and most of all have fun.

Have a destination in mind?

Start looking for hot deals below with Expedia and imagine the possibilities for your next trip. I love scoring hot deals on flights, and my usual first search begins with Expedia.
