So what exactly is a Full Moon Party?
Basically, the Full Moon Party is one of the biggest and best rave parties in the world. I’ve partied with people of all ages and nationalities all having fun in this very unique time. Frankly, I think it’s one of Thailand’s unforgettable experiences. Thailand’s Full Moon Party is a must on your travel bucket list.
Just imagine you’re at a massive beach party with thousands of like-minded party-goers, with glowing neon paint, fire shows, and dancing under the radiant moonlight. As a seasoned budget traveler, I’ve got you covered with all the tips and tricks you need to make the most of this epic event without breaking the bank!
In case you’re wondering the official “Full Moon Party” takes place on the island of Koh Phangan. It gets its name because it’s synced to the lunar calendar, so every month when the full moon lands, there’s the party.

How to get to Thailand’s Full Moon Party?
The easiest way to get the essentials sorted out is via a fully guided tour. For me, tours are the easiest way to get to your destination hassle free so you don’t have to worry about the details. Luckily there are several tour operators that specialize with this unique beach party:
I did my trip with Intro Travel which was a 12 day tour of Thailand with 4 days on Koh Phangan – Thai Intro 12 Day starting in Bangkok and ending in Koh Phi Phi – they do offer a 9, 12 and 18 day trip that all allow you to attend the Full Moon Party.
Tru Travels offers a 16 day your – Full Moon Island Hopper starting in Bangkok and ending in Phuket.
If 16 days is too long then you can opt for the 10 day trip – Full Moon Experience starting in Bangkok and end in Ko Pha Ngan.
Contiki offers their own tour in Thailand that covers the Full Moon Party – Thai Island Hopper East
If you’re NOT traveling with a tour getting to Koh Phangan isn’t difficult.
From Koh Samui to Koh Phangan is VERY short, you can catch the ferry and should realistically take you about 45 minutes.
From Koh Tao you can take the ferry to your island party paradise. The distance between islands isn’t much so your ferry ride should last about an hour to 90 minutes depending on the operator.
From Phuket, you need to get to Surat Thani. You have two choices: you can take a short flight (prices will vary) or take a bus for $15 (USD). The bus ride is about 4 hours to Surat Thani and then you need to go to Donsak pier to catch the ferry (I took the Seatran Ferry) to Koh Phangan, which is about 2 hours.
From Bangkok to Surat Thani you can take a short flight or take an overnight train (I’ve did the overnight train and it wasn’t bad at all). From the train station, you then need to get a bus ride to Donsak Pier in Surat Thani, and then take the ferry (Seatran Ferry) over to Koh Phangan.
Booking Affordable Flights to Koh Phangan:
Always keep an eye on flight deals and use fare comparison websites to snag the best prices. Being flexible with your travel dates can save you a ton of cash too. Please check out my post on How To Find Cheap Flights or you can search cheap flights right here on Booking.com or Kiwi.com

Budget Accommodations Near the Party Zone:
This is why I like tours, you don’t have to worry at all about any hostel or hotel bookings… that are already in the tour package.
If you’re NOT booking a tour then don’t worry, there are so many cheap accommodations on Ko Pha Ngan. You won’t have much trouble finding a place to rest your head after a hard night of partying.
Hot Tip: I highly recommend booking your accommodation in advance because these Full Moon parties are so popular they sell out quickly.
I highly recommend using HosteWorld for finding accommodations in Thailand and when visiting Ko Phangan. I must recommend do not stay on a neighboring island if you are visiting for the full moon party. Just stay on Koh Phangan. it’s too much of a hassle trying to get back to another island late at night or early in the morning after the party.

Wear Light and Practical Clothing:
This is easy, t-shirts, tank tops, shorts and closed-toe sandals or flip-flops are ideal. Ladies, a simple flowy dress or whatever makes you comfortable.
However, the tradition is wearing something very colorful so think tie-dye and you’ll fit right in.
Is There a Cost for the Full Moon Party?
Yes, to get into the Full Moon Party there is a 200 THB fee (a little over $6 USD) and you get a wristband…makes a nice little souvenir.

How to navigate Thailand on a Budget:
When I landed in Thailand, I avoided the airport money exchange since the rates suck. I just withdrew cash from the local ATM. Thailand is extremely cheap; the local beer was $3 USD (large bottle – around 22 ounces) and street food was as little as $2 USD. As for local transportation, get the Grab app… it’s so much better!
Keep in mind on Koh Phangan the Grab app doesn’t work so you’ll need to either leave with a group you then pay about 250 THB per person to get back to your hostel/hotel.
Hot Tip: Buy your alcohol at 7-Eleven to save money. Alcohol adds up; this is what the group and I spent most of our money on.

I was able to score some buckets at 150 TBH ($5 USD) and I can’t lie I was already buzzed from the pre-party at the Sarana Bungalows…drinks that night were 2 for 1. Yep, I was drinking like I was in my 20’s again.
Making the Most of Your Experience:
Let’s wrap up with some practical dos and don’ts to ensure you have a blast without any major hiccups.
Do’s: Safety and Party Etiquette
- The glowing neon body paint is a party staple, so just do it and have fun.
- Check out one of the many fire shows that you’re bound to see (just don’t participate).
- Be smart and stay hydrated.
- Bring some BAHT (cash) with you…don’t forget this!
- Be respectful to locals and fellow travelers.
- Do try new experiences and dance like nobody’s watching.
Don’ts: Avoid these common mistakes
- Don’t accept drinks from strangers…you never know.
- Not drinking enough water. Remember the weather is hot and humid even at night so drink plenty of water.
- Don’t do drugs…they’re illegal in Thailand and you can face jail time. It’s not worth it. Thai police are beginning to crack down on smoking weed in public.
- Keep it simple and leave your valuables back at the hostel.
- Don’t forget your footwear; the last thing you want is stepping on broken glass. I myself wore closed-toe sandals.
- Don’t go in the ocean, I remember people taking pee breaks in the water and floating beer bottles.
Memories Last a Lifetime!
Your Full Moon Party in a way is a rite of passage. At least for me, it was and still remains one of the best beach parties I’ve been to. As long as you’re open and friendly, you’ll be able to reflect on the memories you’ve created and the friendships you’ve made.

Some of the coolest things going on during the Full Moon Party are the fire shows. I absolutely recommend checking this out… one of the best examples is when skilled performers do the ‘sparks of sand’ routine.
